How well do you know your boobs? 6 mind-boggling facts

Breasts come in all shapes and sizes and can increase in volume during that time of the month. Check. We all pretty much know about that, but how well do you really know your boobs? Read on to find out the amazing things your breasts are capable of.

1. Orgasmic nipples

When it comes to the female orgasm we all know that the clitoris is where you want to be (however hard it might be for some men to find). But did you know that your nipples can do the same trick? Stimulating them activates the same part of the brain as the clitoris according to a study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. That would explain why some women can climax through nipple stimulation. So why not give it a go? A “breastgasm” might not be for everyone though.

2. Smaller right breast

Did you know that you’re not the only one if one breast is bigger than the other? In fact, this is true for most women. Appararently 65 percent of women walk around with a larger left breast. Why would one left be larger than the other? There are a few different theories, one of which quotes immune hypersensitivity. This can have an impact on the hormones that influence your breast size and shape and is thought to be higher on the left side of the body.

3. What’s your nipple type?

Like breasts, nipples also come in a few different forms. When people talk about “normal” nipples, they usually mean nipples that protrude a few milimeters from the areola (the pigmented area around the nipple). But not all nipples are created equal and some are reasonably flat and only stick out when stimulated or when the temperature drops.

A third type is the inverted nipple, which is pretty much the opposite of the “normal” nipple. Yes it’s pointing, but the other way. Then there are also women with “puffy” nipples, where the areola is raised. Of course it’s also possible to have a combination of the different nipple types. Some people might have a “normal” nipple on the left side and an inverted one on other breast.

4. A third nipple isn’t that uncommon

Don’t freak out if you’ve discovered a third nipple on your breast. There’s nothing wrong with you and it’s actually more common than you would think. About 6 percent of the population has a third nipple or even more. Lily Allen and Mark Wahlberg are said to have more than two nipples, so you’re in good company.

5. Humans are the only primates with permanent breasts

While a lot of animals breastfeed, it seems humans are the only primates with permanent boobies. Other primates also get bigger breasts, but only when they give birth and have suckling little ones. For some reason we get to have full breasts, whether or not we’re breastfeeding. According to one theory this is because the full breasts are a sign that a woman has “residual productive value”.

6. Arousal changes colors

You’ve probably noticed that your nipples get firmer when you’re sexually aroused, but did you know the color of your areolas probably change color too? Amanda Wheeler, MD, explains that they tend to get darker during arousal. So next time you’re getting it on, whey not check it out and see if yours do the color trick as well.
